Herbert Road
Green Oasis

Type: Public
Client:  HRGO Community Group
Location: SE London
Status: Ongoing

Becoming X were approached by the Green Oasis volunteer group to assist in the creation of a groundbreaking project to green-up a neighbourhood's main shopping street that had been neglected in recent years.

The one tree on the site had died and the area had become a spot for litter and anti-social behaviour. A group of local residents had decided to transform this area of Herbert Road into a green oasis by planting trees, flowers, and shrubs and formalising information and hazardous paths.

Becoming X helped the volunteer group articulate their proposal and lobby the Local Council for permission and funding to create a project that now offers a wide range of benefits to the local community, including:

Enhancing health and wellbeing - When surveyed, almost 30% of respondents felt the project was important for their health and wellbeing.

Better green space for residents: Local statistics show that 62.2% of the Ward population live in a flat and may not enjoy access to a garden.

Offering new skills and training: Residents can learn from the community gardener, and offer time to help maintain the oasis and other projects.

Positive action: 99% of residents asked support the project. In fact, we started early: This summer, we planted sunflowers and Jerusalem artichokes at the proposed location. Residents offered help with watering. Within weeks, a rose bush was planted and watered daily.

The site was developed in the later part of the 20C where previously there had been rows of Victorian terraced houses. It is now part of a larger estate called Edge Hill House and adjacent to the Barnfield Estate which has recently undergone a very successful regeneration of which greenspaces were a key part.

Thank you to all the groups and individuals who helped fund this project, including:
  • Friends of Barnfield Estate
  • Royal Borough of Greenwich
  • The Mayor of London
  • Woolwich Common Ward Councilors
