The project works within the tight restraints of a Conservation Area - choosing to rework the existing staircase to allow access to the loft rather than compromise the space within the existing first-floor bedrooms. Due to the planning restraints, a traditional box dormer was not possible leading to a design that had to make use of the existing loft to create a beautiful new bedroom and shower room.
Physical models were used to explore proportion and light and communicate with the client in an intuitive way - allowing them to make confident, collaborative decisions throughout the project.
The project employs wood-based insulation and breathable finishes to avoid the use of unnecessary oil-based insulation of plastic membranes.
The rear extension opens up the ground floor, creating a generous, light-filled living and kitchen space with a strong connection to the garden.
The ground floor extension rear elevation is angled to optomise the properties orientation in relation to the sun and avoid a ‘wrap around’ type extension.
